1. Discover the secret life of bees at The Hive

Located within the beautiful grounds of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, London, The Hive is a multi-sensory experience designed to highlight the extraordinary life of bees. Designed by UK-based artist Wolfgang Buttress, the award-winning sculpture stands at 17 metres tall, and features immersive sounds and lights triggered by a real beehive at Kew. Adult tickets are available from £14, while family tickets start from £20. Advance booking necessary. 

 

2. See style history at Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion

The Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion exhibition at the V&A takes an intimate look at the work and legacy of influential Spanish couturier Cristóbal Balenciaga. Showcasing a whole host of iconic garments, from baby-doll dresses to avant-garde hats, the exhibition features over 100 pieces crafted by ‘the master’ of haute couture, along with his protégées and contemporaries. Tickets are available for £12. See it until 18th February 2018.

 

3. Find a new fantasy world in The Dark Tower

Based on Stephen King’s novel series of the same name, The Dark Tower tells the story of the last Gunslinger, Roland Deschain (Idris Elba), who is locked in a battle with a sorcerer Walter O’Dim (Matthew McConaughey), also known as The Man in Black. Determined to stop him from toppling the Dark Tower, a mysterious, powerful structure that holds the universe together, Roland must embark on a difficult journey to save the world. See it in UK cinemas from 18th August.

 

4. Celebrate arts and culture at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is the world’s largest celebration of arts and culture, with the Scottish capital playing host to an explosion of creative energy for three weeks every August. Now in its 70th year, The Fringe showcases thousands of performances from big names and unknown artists, and includes theatre, comedy, dance, circus, cabaret, children’s shows, musicals, opera and more. Catch it between 4th-28th August, at various locations around the city.

 

5. Fly high at the Portsmouth Kite Festival

Taking place on Southsea Common, Hampshire, the Portsmouth Kite Festival is a free, family-friendly event packed with exciting displays plus food traders, craft stalls and children’s entertainment. This year’s theme is ‘The Seven Continents’, with a series of colourful kite demonstrations from around the world set to take place. Head down to the two-day event on 12-13th August from 10am-5pm.
