Define the Season: Dressing the Christmas Table with Denby

With the season’s festivities centring around the dining table, it’s the perfect opportunity to make a masterpiece of your place settings. We invite Nicola Wilson, senior designer at Denby pottery, to share her tips for creating a stunning arrangement using the Monsoon Collection: created with intricate patterns from our fabric archives.

1. Choose Understated Elegance

The Lucille Gold and Filigree collections showcase beautifully elegant patterns taken from Monsoon’s fabric archives, featuring shimmering delicate gold and soft silver on cream fine china. The understated, warm metallics, with a hint of mother of pearl, lend themselves to creating stunning table displays and are perfect for this time of year.

2. Mix Your Materials

Shining metallics mix beautifully with other materials, such as smooth white tableware, and are a key look at Christmas. Why not use a wash-off metallic pen to decorate your drinking glasses, so that they double as place markers? Alternatively, write guests’ names on glass votive holders – they’ll look so stylish and create a warm, ambient lighting.

Layer your crockery upon the table for a modern look, starting with a large plate and using a top bowl to hold a gift – don’t be afraid to use tableware pieces to hold items other than food! A bauble makes a memorable gift for guests who can add them to their own tree. Re-appropriating tableware is the key at Christmas: these same small bowls can be used for cranberry, bread sauce or other accompaniments as well as a helping of pudding later on.

Table linens are perfect for softening the overall look, providing further warmth and layering to your spread. The Lucille Gold and Filigree ranges also have matching place mats and coasters, which you can use these in the centre of the table as well as for each person’s setting.

3. Lighting & Foliage

Lighting is key to creating a warm and relaxed ambience. Fairy lights aren’t just for the tree anymore, so invite them to the table by filling a bowl or jar with battery-powered twinkling lights for a magical centrepiece. Make sure to have plenty of candles around too – they look great in a line along the table.

Foliage is important for creating this year’s natural look, so bring it to the table and the room for a wintry feel. Place cuttings from your own Christmas tree in glass vases to add seasonal aroma, and bring in winter branches to spray with metallic paint or adorn with lights.  Fake foliage can also look amazing these days – the beautiful greens of succulents look wonderful placed in the large mugs or dessert bowls from our collections.

Fragrance is an ever-increasing interior trend and I always have my personal favourite of cinnamon and apple in the air when guests are around.

4. Make It Personal

Think about making your own handmade gifts for the table – they can be subtle and personalised for each guest! Simple Christmas biscuits or homemade sweets and would look amazing wrapped in white paper or tissue, teamed with gold or silver twine or ribbon to complement the look.

5. Embrace Versatile Pieces

The Lucille Gold and Filigree ranges work equally well in contemporary and traditional interiors (against a backdrop of richly coloured walls as much as they do with light contemporary shades) allowing you to change your theme throughout the festive season. Understated and not overly formal, these designs make even a snack seem more of an occasion.

6. Lastly, Make Washing Up Easy

Despite their elegant look, both the Lucille Gold and Filigree collections can be used in the dishwasher, microwave, oven and freezer – making them a perfectly practical choice for everyday as well as a special dining occasion.

Remember, Christmas is all about the company and food.  Detailed touches and accessories complete the look, but don’t clutter the tableware excessively – leave some space for the serving dishes!
