From sun, to rain, to sun again: Our favourite denim pieces for between-season dressing

If you’re up early enough, you’ll notice that the mornings are feeling a little bit chillier recently. Which can only mean one thing: It’s that cold-in-the-morning, sweating-in-the-afternoon time of year – or pre-fall, as the fashion magazines like to call it.

From those unexpected Indian summer days to that first crispy leaf walk, our guide to pre-fall dressing will see you through the seasonal transition.

If there’s one thing we know is a staple for now, it’s classic denim. Jeans are starting to re-emerge for the year and denim jackets are slowly becoming an everyday essential (whether worn or tied around your waist).

Thinking about how you can build your pre-autumn capsule wardrobe? Look no further.

Blue denim mini skirts: An August-to-autumn staple

Ahhh, old faithful. From 90s mini skirts, early 00s denim maxis, to the classic A-line style, denim skirts have well and truly stood the test of time.

For a look that’ll have you covered whatever the weather, pair a blue denim mini skirt with a bohemian blouse, mesh ballet flats, white knit slung over the shoulders or a 70s inspired suedette jacket. Take it into chillier days with a pair of low-denier tights and your favourite autumn boots.

Denim dresses: Very demure, very mindful

Pre-fall dressing is all about versatility, and we’re still finding ways to wear this denim dress. Pair it up with ballet flats or boots, or opt for a layered look by popping a collar shirt underneath, or a cosy jumper over the top for that skirt-and-jumper illusion.

Jeans: The main character

Life simply isn’t complete with an amazing pair of denim jeans.

Keep it cool and casual with these bestselling wide-leg jeans. Their high waist and relaxed cut makes them a super-comfortable option for Sunday morning walks, Fridays in the office, or pottering around town. Simply pair them with a classic cotton T-shirt, lightweight leopard-print jacket or collared cardigan and a pair of metallic ballet flats for the perfect pre-fall outfit.

Denim layering

Double denim isn’t going anywhere fast.

Putting a little twist on a classic, this denim bomber jacket brings a little edge to your look. The lightweight finish and zip fastening makes it the perfect on-and-off piece (literally) for pre-autumn days. Pair with blue wide-leg jeans, a white T-shirt, stripe shirt, belt and 70s inspired wedges for an outfit with the perfect amount of edge.
