How to Wear Tie-Dye

Synonymous with the sixties, and re-popularised in the nineties, tie-dye has resurfaced for SS18, filtering down from the runways straight into our new season wardrobes. Having shaken off its homespun and grungy connotations, the trend now evokes an irrevocably luxe feel, thanks to a mix of pared-back palettes and modern shapes. Here’s how to wear it…

1. The Easy Tee

How to wear tie-dye without going all-out? The answer lies in the jersey tee. Understated and easy to style, it’s the simplest way to tap into the trend. Try yours tucked into denim shorts, finishing with flat sandals and your favourite pair of sunglasses for a laid-back look.

2. The Smock Dress

Tie-dye might have moved on from its free-spirited foundations but there’s still room to reference its roots – namely through the smock dress. Dyed by hand using traditional artisanal techniques, this bold blue number effortlessly fuses the classic with the contemporary. Team with simple sandals, making it feel more relevant with a tasselled straw bag.

3. The Maxi Dress

Floor-grazing maxis have long been the favourites of our getaway wardrobes and this season’s tie-dyed designs are no different. Taking notes from the monochrome trend, this free-flowing dress has been also been hand-dyed by skilled craftspeople, giving it a wholly unique look. Throw it on over a bikini, and accessorise with natural textures and metallic details.

4. The Sarong

Off to the beach? Make room in your suitcase selection for one of the season’s most-coveted comeback pieces: the sarong. Perfect for tying around your waist, this navy number has been tie-dyed with white ripples that mirror the movement of water, and finished with a trim of pom-poms. Wear yours with your bikini.

5. The Jersey Dress

An exotic backdrop isn’t always a requirement when it comes to wearing tie-dye. Taking you from far-flung destinations to sunny days on home ground, this jersey dress is versatile as it is stylish. Complete the look with a straw fedora and espadrille wedges.
